About this tool

This reads a YouTube video's description straight from the page's metadata, the same field search engines and link previews use. YouTube stores that text HTML-escaped (so an apostrophe becomes ', an ampersand becomes &, and so on), this tool decodes it back into normal readable text and keeps the original line breaks intact, so you get the description exactly as the creator wrote it.

How to use it

  1. Paste a YouTube video URL (a full watch?v= link or a short youtu.be link).
  2. Click Extract description.
  3. Copy the text with one click, or download it as a plain .txt file.

Tips: very long descriptions (timestamps, credits, links) are shown in full and scroll inside the box, nothing is truncated. If a description is genuinely empty on the video, the tool will say so rather than showing a blank box with no explanation.

Why do some special characters look off in the description meta tag before decoding?

YouTube HTML-escapes the description when it embeds it in the page (so it's safe to place inside an HTML attribute). This tool decodes those escapes, like &, ', and numeric entities, back into the actual characters before showing you the text.

Does it preserve line breaks and formatting?

Yes, the description is rendered with line breaks intact so multi-line descriptions (timestamps, links, credits) read the same way they do on YouTube.

What if a video has no description?

If the video's description is genuinely empty, the tool says so plainly instead of showing an empty box, so you're not left wondering whether extraction failed.

Is this the full description, or a shortened preview?

It's read from the page's description meta tag, which YouTube populates with the description text; very long descriptions are shown in full inside a scrollable box.
