About this tool

This converts across length, weight, temperature, volume, and cooking-measurement categories using fixed conversion factors to a common base unit per category (meters for length, grams for weight, and so on), except temperature, which needs an offset formula rather than a simple multiplier since 0°C isn't 0°F or 0K. Cooking conversions go a step further and apply an ingredient-specific density, because a cup of flour and a cup of honey don't weigh the same — the natural-language box and value comparer both build on the same underlying conversion tables.

Why are cooking measurement conversions only approximate?

A "cup" is a fixed volume, but how much that volume weighs depends on the ingredient's density and how it's packed — a scooped cup of flour weighs less than a spooned-and-leveled cup of the same flour. The figures here use typical average densities per ingredient, which is accurate enough for most recipes but not a substitute for weighing on a kitchen scale when precision actually matters.

What does the precision setting actually change?

It controls how many decimal places the result is rounded to for display — it doesn't change the underlying calculation, which is always done at full floating-point precision. Auto-precision picks a sensible number of decimals based on the size of the result so tiny values don't get rounded to zero and large ones don't show meaningless extra digits.

What's the value comparer for?

It lets you enter two values in different units of the same category and see which is larger, with a proportional bar showing the size difference visually — useful for quickly sanity-checking things like whether 3 liters or 1 gallon is more, without doing the conversion math yourself first.
