Remove Text Formatting

Strip Markdown symbols, HTML tags and link syntax, leaving clean text

About this tool

Markdown-formatted text is full of symbols that carry meaning to a renderer — asterisks for bold or italic, backticks for code, hash marks for headings, and bracketed link syntax — but those symbols become visual noise once you paste the text somewhere that won't render Markdown, like a plain form field or a text message. This tool strips HTML tags, removes the common Markdown punctuation used for bold, italic, strikethrough, code, headings and blockquotes, and unwraps link syntax so only the visible link text remains, leaving clean readable prose.

What happens to Markdown links?

A link written as [link text](https://example.com) is converted to just "link text" — the visible label is kept and the URL and brackets are discarded.

Does it also strip HTML tags mixed into the text?

Yes — any HTML tags present alongside Markdown syntax are removed the same way, so mixed-format content still comes out clean.

Which Markdown symbols does it remove?

Asterisks and underscores (bold/italic), backticks (code), hash marks (headings), the greater-than sign (blockquotes), and tildes (strikethrough) are all stripped, along with link brackets.

Taking the symbols out

Markdown symbols, HTML tags and link syntax are removed and what's left is the plain wording. Bold markers, italics, headings and the brackets around links disappear, but the link text stays.

If you write in Markdown or copy text from a chat app that uses it, you'll know the problem: you paste a message into a place that doesn't render formatting, and it's full of asterisks and underscores. This takes them out in one step.

For stripping tags from a web page specifically, the Plain Text Converter is the better match. This one focuses on the markup writers type by hand.

Good to know

A link's address is dropped along with the brackets, so keep a copy of the original if you need the URLs.
